Weather Update for This Weekend into Early Next Week

The National Weather Service Portland is forecasting gusty winds, heavy rain and hazardous marine conditions Saturday through Tuesday.

• Three weather systems will widespread rain, Cascade snow and gusty winds late Friday night through Tuesday
• Gusty southerly winds Saturday into Sunday, strongest along the Coast
• Strong winds and high seas for the Coastal Waters Saturday through Monday with potential for Storm Force Winds Saturday

Clatsop County Emergency Management will monitor this storm and any updates will be posted at ClatsopCounty.gov and social media.

Daylight saving time begins this Sunday, March 10, meaning clocks will move forward one hour and you may have to get up earlier.

The candidate filing deadline for four elected positions in Clatsop County is this Tuesday, March 12.

The open positions are for County Commissioner District 2, County Commissioner District 4, Sheriff, and Precinct Committee Persons.

Precinct committee persons represent the Democratic or Republican parties in each precinct and are elected during the primary election.

Getting Ready for Our 180th Birthday

Clatsop County is gearing up to celebrate turning 180 years young on June 22.

To mark the historic occasion, we invite residents to send stories and photos of family memories that have been passed through generations or a personal recollection of a major event that happened in Clatsop County.

“We know some of the best stories in Clatsop County have been passed down through grandparents, neighbors and family friends. We are asking people to share a story that has been told to them or their own memories of a major Clatsop County event such as the 2007 Storm or the building of the Astoria-Megler Bridge,” said Clatsop County Board of Commissioners Chair Mark Kujala.

Youth are also being encouraged to participate. “This is a great opportunity to bring people closer through sharing memories,” Chair Kujala said.

 You can share your story four ways:

1. Call 503-325-7870 and record your story
2. Record a conversation with a family member and upload the audio file
3. Email [email protected] to request an interview
4. Write up your story and send it to: Clatsop County; 800 Exchange St., Suite 410; Astoria, OR 97103 or [email protected]

Stories will be posted through June 30 at the Clatsop County Voices webpage. After the deadline, the County will donate them to the Clatsop County Historical Society.

Oregonians 65 and older can now get an additional dose of the 2023–2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine following a federal announcement that opened eligibility to older adults, who are most at risk for severe outcomes of the virus.

Paul Cieslak, M.D., medical director for communicable diseases and immunizations at the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Public Health Division, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Feb. 28 approval of a second dose of the 2023–2024 updated COVID-19 vaccine released last fall can provide increased protection for older adults.

Another Rebate Opportunity for EV Charging Stations

The Oregon Department of Transportation's Community Charging Rebates Program, which helps fund Level 2 electric vehicle projects in Oregon’s communities, has opened its next funding round.

The application window is open through July 3, 2024, or until funding is exhausted. This is the program’s second funding round and with $2.5 million available for projects. 

Eligible businesses, nonprofits, public entities, Tribes, and owners of multifamily home complexes may apply.

FDA Cautions Public About Certain Ground Cinnamon Products

The Federal Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to throw away and not to buy certain ground cinnamon products because samples of these products were found to contain elevated levels of lead. 

Based on the FDA’s assessment, prolonged exposure to these products may be unsafe and could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood.

Escape the Vape Youth Video Contest Underway

Cash Prizes for Youth and Schools

Clatsop County launched Escape the Vape, a youth vaping prevention video contest with cash prizes for youth and their school. 

Clatsop County middle and high school-age youth are invited to create and submit a 30-second public service announcement video to educate their peers on the dangers of e-cigarette use, also known as vaping.

Winter Ice Storm Low Interest Loans

The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering low-interest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses economically impacted by the January 12-20, 2024, winter ice storm.

The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in 18 Oregon counties, including Clatsop.

Applicants may apply online and receive additional disaster assistance information at SBA.gov/disaster. The deadline to apply is Friday, November 8, 2024.

Crews will be:

• Performing road repairs on Hamlet Road
• Grading Hamlet Road and Hill Road
• Chopping roadside brush within the Brownsmead area
• Performing ditch maintenance of Wireless Road, Lewis and Clark Road, and Youngs River Road

ROAD CLOSURE: (Svensen)—Old Highway 30 between Conroy Road and Koppisch Road:

Beginning Monday, March 25, Old Highway 30 in Svensen will be closed to all through traffic between Conroy Road and Koppisch Road for a culvert replacement at MP 3.2 and a slide repair at MP 3.0. The closure at MP 3.2 will begin on the morning of March 25 and will be directly followed by the closure at MP 3.0.

This work is anticipated to last approximately one week. Utilize Conroy Road and Hillcrest Loop Road as a detour. Detour signage will be in place during the closure.

On March 1, 2024, recording hours changed to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Passports

An appointment is required prior to coming in for new passport processing. Routine service can take 6-8 weeks; Expedite service can take 2-3 weeks. Forms are available at www.travel.state.gov
